Serres Prefecture

The Prefecture of Serres belongs in Central Macedonia and extends from the Greek-Bulgarian border to the sea estuary of Strymonas River. Serres is a flat region since 48% of the total area is characterized as flat-semi mountainous. On the west you will see Kerkini, Vertiskos, and Kerdylion mountain ranges. On the east there are the mountains of Orvilos, Menikio, and Pangaio and on the north you will find Mount Beles. Strymonas River, which starts from Bulgaria and flows into Strymonikos gulf, crosses the region. Its main tributary is Aggitis, in the eastern part of the county, which flows between Paggeo and Menikio mountains. 41% of the total area of the county is agricultural land and, of course, agriculture is the main occupation of the locals. The city of Serres is the administrative and commercial center of the prefecture. The major towns of the area are Sidirokastro and Nigrita.

Although tourism does not play a major role in the local economy, the region has a good infrastructure to accommodate the travelers who want to explore the sites of historical or archaeological interest and the natural beauty of the region. The ancient city of Amphipolis with its archaeological museum is definitely worth the visit, while the monastery of Timios Prodromos is one of the most beautiful monasteries in Greece. In the northern part of the prefecture the natural landscape is captivating. Don’t forget to visit the artificial lake of Kerkini, the magnificent forest of Lailia, the modern ski resort and the impressive cave of Alistrati beside the gorge of Aggitis River.
